The origins of these competitions go back to the days when draught animals were used for recreational purposes.
Throughout history, the races have been held in different parts of the municipality until 2002, when the Pla de Roquillo racecourse was inaugurated.
Nowadays, the donkey races are organised by different local youth groups and are considered one of the most entertaining and popular events.
As for the horse races, they are organised in different categories, but the English thoroughbred races are the main protagonists, with the fastest animals and some famous jockeys taking part.
It is worth mentioning that in July 2012 the horse and donkey races of la Sénia were declared a Traditional Festival of Regional Interest.
